Vonovia: Prompt flood relief in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate
– Supporting the clean-up and recovery efforts
– Looking after people in the affected areas
– Provision of housing at short notice
Bochum, Germany, July 22, 2021– The residential property company Vonovia owns a large number of flats in the areas that were hit particularly badly by the flood disaster, i. e. Cologne-Bonn, Aachen/Eschweiler and Bergisches Land. Several thousand tenants are struggling with the impact of heavy rainfall on their homes, basements and neighbourhoods. To help people in this situation, many Vonovia employees have been working non-stop since the rainstorms struck on 14 July in an effort to support the clean-up and recovery activities in the affected communities.
“For us, it goes without saying that we should offer our assistance to everyone who’s affected, not just our own tenants,” says Mario Stamerra, Director of Vonovia’s Western Region. “So the Vonovia team will continue to support the work in the affected communities. We’ve already been able to offer temporary or even permanent accommodation at very short notice to people who had to leave their homes due to flooding. Our good cooperation with local councils has really proved its worth in this difficult situation.”
Among other things, Vonovia has contributed a food truck to provide free food for locals and relief workers. A team of around 20 from Vonovia’s Residential Environment Services are currently working in the flood-hit area in Rhineland-Palatinate. They are supported by a low-loader truck from a shipping company, so that they can move the required machinery, pumps and supplies. Vonovia’s fleet is using several low-loader trucks, platform trucks with trailers, four diggers and three wheel loaders.
Vonovia flats as accommodation for flood victims
In addition, Vonovia has been able to offer short-term assistance to people affected in their housing situation. For example, the housing company has provided several flats in Cologne, Bonn, Leverkusen, Eschweiler and Aachen for immediate occupancy. These flats are available free of charge for one month and without a deposit. Also, where people have lost their homes completely or where their own accommodation has become unusable for a long period of time, Vonovia is offering to take over the tenancy agreement at short notice and without any red tape, enabling people to make a “fresh start”.
“Vonovia is not just a landlord in the affected areas, but we see ourselves as part of the community,” says Rolf Buch, CEO of Vonovia. “We’re currently seeing a tremendous wave of solidarity in Germany. But we should also start thinking about tomorrow at this point: The flood disaster is yet another sign of climate change, and we must be united and fully committed to address-ing this issue.”
