"I am very pleased that Switzerland, as the host country, was able to allocate all of the starting places and that we were thus able to raise the outstanding sum of more than CHF 1.5 million. This means we were able to exceed our goal by quite a bit," says André Krause, CEO of Sunrise, enthusiastically. A total of 540 people from all over Liberty Global, as well as partners and others, took part in the "The Big Ride ". 200 Sunrise employees also took part in the sporting challenge. Participants could cycle on one or two days (60 to 170km a day), complete a half marathon or marathon on the second day, or combine two sports in a duathlon. Also taking part again this year was Mike Fries, CEO of Liberty Global. This year, the companies in the Liberty Global family have donated £1.3 million (over CHF 1.5 million) to participate in the "The Big Ride ". The fundraising will continue until September 30, 2022. “I was delighted to be in Switzerland this year for our biggest ‘Big Ride’ to date. A huge thanks to our headline sponsor Sunrise UPC and CEO André Krause who made the event possible. Sunrise’s support was invaluable, from scouting out some beautiful routes for our runners and riders as well as bringing over 200 participants to take part. It is events like the Big Ride, which enable Street Child to respond immediately to emergencies, such as the recent earthquake in Afghanistan where we have an urgent humanitarian response, handing out hundreds of emergency packs to households in the worst affected regions”, says Tom Dannatt, Street Child CEO and Founder.
Sustainable success Participating in the Big Ride is a challenge. But those who take on the challenge help improve the lives of children and their families who live in some of the most difficult regions of the world. Each year, the event raises a tremendous amount of money to help children and communities in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. Since 2008, Street Child has helped more than 706,887children go to school and learn, and helped 82,387 families start businesses so they can afford the long-term cost of their children's education – and that wouldn't have been possible without the support of Big Ride participants.
